Supporting Excellence in Gender Research

Welcome

Gender ARC (Advanced Research Consortium on Gender, Culture and the Knowledge Society) is a research network linking more than fifty academics at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Limerick who are engaged in gender-focused research across diverse disciplines including: Business, Economics, Education, Film Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Geography, History, Health Sciences, Irish Studies, Languages, Law, Literature, Nursing and Midwifery, Politics and Sociology.  Established in January 2011 following the launch of the NUI Galway-UL strategic research alliance, Gender ARC is affiliated with the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change and the Moore Institute for Humanities and Social Studies at NUI Galway and with the Institute for the Study of Knowledge in Society at UL.

The start of the 21st century has been marked by deepening globalisation, global financial crises and unprecedented change across social, cultural, economic, and political domains. Such conditions pose complex challenges for individuals, communities, economies and polities as well as offering many opportunities for innovative and creative transformation. Importantly, these challenges and opportunities are not gender neutral but are expressed, experienced and understood in nuanced gendered ways.

Gender ARC is organized into two principal research groups: Gender and Public Policy and Gender and Gender, Discourse and Identities. Members of Gender ARC recognise the centrality of gender within wider research agendas on culture, society, economy, politics, law and education. Further, Gender ARC seeks to play a leading role in demonstrating the integral role of the arts, humanities and social sciences in underpinning self-reflecting, creative, just and flourishing societies at every level. Gender ARC is committed to exploring the gender dimensions of all aspects of human endeavour in order to deepen understanding of past and current events and challenges, inform and enhance public debate and policy formation, and foster appreciation of human creativity and diversity, locally and globally.
